Alternative Fuel Refuse Trucks:
Healthier Air and Energy Security for Lower Merion and Beyond

YOU'RE INVITED...

Greater Philadelphia Clean Cities Inc., Bryn Mawr College Civic Engagement Office and Environmental Studies Program and Energy Vision invite you to come learn about the clean fuels choices that can help ensure healthier air, greater energy security and movement toward sustainability for Lower Merion and other townships. You will see the world’s cleanest, quietest refuse truck, powered by domestic natural gas (which now operates in more than 60 US municipalities) and a Honda GX natural gas Civic – available to both municipal fleets and individuals.

WHY HAVE THIS WORKSHOP?

Lower Merion Township is facing a decision that will affect the environmental and energy future of the Township for years to come.  Many other communities are facing it as well: what alternative fuel should they invest in for their fleets? What are the best vehicle technologies and the best fuels for reducing emissions and eliminating reliance on diesel? This workshop focuses on the choices available and particularly addresses a new national trend: the growing use of natural gas refuse trucks in communities. You will hear about the first two initiatives on the East Coast (on Long Island), involving a shift to 100% new natural gas fleets, why they were undertaken and their results. You will hear about Philadelphia’s efforts to shift their refuse fleet from diesel to natural gas. We will also learn how communities get the new refueling stations for these fleets and how the projects are funded, including financial incentives and new funding from the Federal stimulus package!

After all questions have been answered, you will have a chance to see a demonstration of a new natural gas refuse truck as well as a natural gas-powered Honda GX natural gas Civic.

BENEFITS

Natural gas refuse trucks are now bringing both near and long term benefits to communities across America – from Sacramento, CA, to San Antonio, TX, to Smithtown and Brookhaven, Long Island. The number of these trucks has more than doubled in just the last two years, from 1,500 to almost 3,000. They are on the streets of Paris, Gothenburg and Madrid as well!

Research from Energy Vision (EV), a national environmental research organization and leading authority on alternative fuels, published in two reports titled Greening Garbage Trucks assessments of all choices and found natural gas models to be “number one” – bringing more and more cities cleaner air, less noise, reduced greenhouse gases, greater fuel security and predictable costs today. EV also found that using natural gas vehicles and refueling infrastructure prepares communities to make a future move to even cleaner fuels such as biomethane from landfill gases or hydrogen.

JOIN US!
We believe that for those who are committed to a sustainable future for the Main Line, learning about and seeing this new technology option will be both interesting and exciting. All are welcome. We look forward to seeing you!
